This site lets you send emails to your friends under the guise of one "David Still", artist. There are pre-written letters you can pick, you just fill in the blanks - or you can write your own. Better still, you can answer replies from people who've answered the mysterious Mr. Still's missives.

Stupidest Thing I've Ever Seen - The Popcorn Fork

There's something very wrong with this world when someone's trying to make money selling a specialized popcorn fork. Personally, I think I can live with the buttery fingers.

U.S. Department of "Duh" Urges Americans to Leave India

No kidding, that never would have occurred to me, were I in India. Of course, though, there'll be a bunch of morons who stay behind. That's a given. Personally I'd have gotten out of there a long time ago, I'd certainly be hitting the road now that it looks as though India and Pakistan might be smoking, radioactive craters any day now.
Editorial Note:

Well, I'd planned on posting a lot more stuff today, I realize I've been slacking lately. I did, at least, manage to fix some links and add a couple new ones in my links section.

One in particular, ..:Temas da Vida:.. was long overdue and I'd like to give a shoutout to Renato, the webmaster. Sorry Renato, I'm a lazy piece of crud, what can I say?

Messing with my template is like pulling teeth for me, otherwise I'd have revamped the whole thing a long time ago, probably.

Arafat Cheese Puffs

The big snack-treat hit on the streets of Egypt these days are Yasser Arafat Cheese Puffs (no joke). Egyptian citizens like the one above are snatching up the brightly colored bags, which feature a cartoon of Arafat with the cheese puffs at his feet (again, no joke) and each bag bought promises not only bite sized morsels of cheesy-goodness, but finance for a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, with the added benefit of sticking it to U.S. goods manufacturers, whose products many Egyptians are calling to boycott.

Weird Vending Machine Items

Everyone's seen vending machines filled with candies or sodas or snacks...but there are a lot of other things that have been sold from vending machines - panty hose, liquor, bait and perfume, from the machine pictured above. Bet that was some great smelling stuff :P
Principal Denies Young Woman's Hard-fought Right to Graduation Walk

If you've read this blog for awhile, you know that two of the things that really tick me off are idiotic public school officials and lawyers. Here's a great example: A girl who'd been paralyzed in a car wreck in 1999 worked for two years to realize her dream of walking across the stage at her graduation commencement.

When the time finally came and she was ready to do it - using her walker - the principal pulled the plug on the idea, citing concern for her safety. Sounds more like he was just scared she'd fall and the school would get sued, even though she'd offered to sign off on liability if anything happened.
The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

Yes, apparently they're serious.
Priest Creates Questionable Boy's Wrestling Federation

Okay, the Catholic church has been taking it pretty hard these days in the media, so probably the last thing on earth they needed was some nutty priest making a website selling videos of young boys wrestling and posing suggestively in speedos, sporting names like "Bad Brad", "Latin Heat" and "Hardkore Kid".

In a time when the church is desperately trying to avoid bad publicity, I'm sure their officials had to down a few alka-selters when this particular padre decided to let his freak flag fly on the net.

Newsflash: Korn Frontman Jonathan Davis is a Total Freak

Okay, maybe that's not exactly a huge revelation, but Davis's latest undertaking is bound to raise some eyebrows - he's planning on opening a museum devoted to his vast collection of serial killer memorabilia.

Beer Can Chicken

Well, it's getting warmer everyday and that means it's time to grill, so here's a recipe I came across while I was browsing on Amazon the other day, a novel little item called "Beer Can Chicken".

I haven't tried this yet but it sounds pretty good. The underlying principle of it is you put the beer can up the chicken's rear *ahem* cavity and the boiling beer tenderizes your bird from the inside out, as well as making a nifty little presentation.

(Caution: boiling beer is hot, like I have to tell you that, so if you burn the hell out of yourself making this, it's all on you, okay?)

Okay, you know you're bored when you have nothing better to do than sit and watch the antics of some zoo gorillas for awhile. I was in just such a place today, if you have nothing better to do, you may as well, too. Beats slitting your wrists.

Handheld Gaming Nostalgia

Who could forget the first wave of handheld videogames? Probably you've owned some of these - chances are they're broken in the bottom of your closet, maybe they're in a landfill somewhere or maybe they're still stashed away in a "contraband" box in your old principal's office. At any rate, the proprietor of The Handheld Game Museum has made it his mission in life to document each and every last one of them.

Senior Prank Shocks, Disgusts

This beyond weird...towards the end of the high school year, pranks by seniors are pretty common, right? This one went way, way, way over the line, though.

"Over the line" being defined as 300 students eating lunch having raccoon urine-filled balloons thrown at them in a full-blown lunchroom riot, with teachers and workers being hurt and the school's television monitor system being taken over in order to show pictures of faculty members' faces attached to famous bodies such as Hitler's.

School officials say they're worried that next year's class will feel a need to "top" this little episode. God help them if they do.

Kazaa, as well, is calling it quits, it appears, though they've sold their network to foreign interests who won't recognize the RIAA's copyright lawsuits, so you may not notice if you use Kazaa or Kazaa Lite.

War Games

Okay, my mind is reeling over here. The United States Army is getting ready start selling it's own retail videogame, a first-person shooter based on the Unreal engine.

This bothers me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, we're at war and at any given time suicide bombers could attack us with explosives, "dirty bombs" or biological agents...we're fighting abroad and things are just pretty tense in general - so why are they worrying about something as trivial as making videogames? It makes sense, in a weird way, I suppose, as propaganda, but aren't there already enough gung-ho military games out there without taxpayers footing the bill for another one?

This brings up my second worry...if the government can wind up spending fifty grand for a toilet or what have you, how much is it going to cost them to make a decent videogame?

(Correction: May 24, 2002 - It's come to my attention that the game in question will NOT be sold in stores, as I said earlier, but given away free as a promotional gimmick. Still, something about the whole idea just bugs me.)

Songfacts

Lots of great trivia about popular songs, such as the following information regarding the Elton John hit, Tiny Dancer:

The "Blue jean baby, L.A. Lady, seamstress for the band" is Maxine Feibelmann, Bernie Taupin's girlfriend. She traveled with the band on their early tours, often sewing together the costumes and fixing their clothes. She and Taupin married in 1971.

Lot of Traffic Today (For This Site, Anyways) Due to Money Origami

I haven't really messed with my blog much the last couple days and today I went by to check out my sitemeter stats and was shocked to find out I'd had a little over 500 visitors today (my average is 49). Apparently tons of people were all looking for the 9/11 twenty-dollar bill tribute instructions.

Look, I'm not trying to turn this into some kind of war-profiteering or anything (not like I have any ads, anyways) but I figured if that many people were coming by looking for the link in question, I'd go ahead and post it again so they'd have an easier time finding it. Hopefully some of you will stick around and browse the rest of the site :)

The $20 Bill Remembrance of 9/11

First up, I'd like to thank Popculturejunkmail.com for plugging me earlier today, it's a great site, go there now, check 'em out. That said, on with the blogging.

This first item is pretty weird, you fold up a twenty dollar bill a certain way and when you're done, one side of the bill shows the flaming pentagon, the other shows the twin towers.
Attack of the Clones Clones

Well, by all accounts, the latest installment of Star Wars, Attack of the Clones, looks to be a smash. Much to Lucasfilms' dismay, however, it's already showing up online. The copies, which are of questionable quality, were apparently filmed at a private screening of the film on a videocamera and uploaded and passed around on IRC..
Compaq Pinches the Pennies

Due to a "hiccup" in their online purchasing system, Compaq Australia mistakenly put a bunch of their pcs on sale for the ridiculously low price of one penny. To make things worse, before discovering the mistake, they'd actually transferred the money and are now offering the buyers a refund of their money. Even though Compaq says it was simply an honest mistake and they're not at fault, as you can imagine, the buyers want their pcs, not the penny back.

Funniest Concept for a Show I've Heard Since The Osbournes

Kato Kaelin, desperately clinging to his fifteen minutes of fame for dear life, like some kind of pit bull that just won't let go, is filming a pilot for a proposed reality show. In the show, called Houseguest, Kaelin, perhaps the most famous couch squatter in history, simply shows up on people's doorsteps and invites himself over to stay as their guest for awhile and the tv crew films his stay. Mind you, this is a funny concept, probably it'll get stale when the novelty wears off, but I got a laugh out of the idea anyway. Hey, whatever Kato, keep milkin' it for all it's worth, that's what America's about, I guess.

"The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." - Mark Twain

Sorry about the lack of updates recently. The sparseness of posts is due to a number of things; I've been getting out a little more lately, for one thing. Never fear, though. I'm not about to take up permanent residence in "meatspace". I'm firmly glued to my chair again at my computer.

Another reason I haven't posted much lately is that I've been getting up earlier.

For some reason, blogging seems, to me - to be a task best performed in the wee hours of the night, surrounded by darkness, basking in the cool, soothing glow of my monitor - all jacked up on Mountain Dew and hearing nothing but the sounds of my fingers going clickety-clack on my keyboard and maybe a good mp3 (the song of the moment, incidentally - Driver's Seat, by Sniff 'n' the Tears).

That said, think I'll do a nice fat update, here's the first post, a funny little mockumentary of Ken Burns' The Civil War that depicts the events of Star Wars' "Battle of Hoth".

Next up, we have this odd, bitter bit of illustration and poetry - a wonderful way for you goth parents out there to teach the kids their abc's, trust me.

Other fun stuff: offbeat items like the infamously diminutive Stonehenge model from This is Spinal Tap. Be sure and listen to the audio of Derek and David extolling the virtues of corporate sponsorship. If you don't know what or whom I'm talking about, either go rent the movie or, failing that, check out some of these clips from it, it's a comedy classic.

Joke Lands Man in Jail

Jeffrey Price Barber, possessing perhaps the world's lousiest sense of humor, decided to play a little joke on his wife - by smearing himself with ketchup, then firing a .22 and letting her come in and find him all bloodied and supposedly dead.

Oops. His distraught wife called 911 and the police didn't find it very funny. They also took into account the fact that previous felony convictions prohibited him from even OWNING a firearm, of which there were plenty in his home. So now Jeffrey's sitting in the pen for five years.

Best Toy Ever

I guess I just have comic books on the mind lately, what with the Spiderman movie coming out Friday, but this has to be the coolest toy ever...well, if you're an old comic-book nerd, at least. Back when I was a kid, I used to read The Green Lantern comic books and always thought it would be really cool if they'd make replicas of his power ring and battery for kids to play with.

Well, they finally have and it's the sharpest toy I've seen in a long while, it even lights up just like the one in the comics when you touch your accompanying power ring to it's face (which, as comic fans will recall, was an intregal part of the Lantern's shtick).

Ah, if only they'd had this when I was ten, I can see myself with this thing in the inner sanctum of my bedroom, reciting the Lantern Corps oath:

In brightest day, in blackest night;
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might;
Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!

Only bummer...the damn thing costs $250...if not I'd buy one, kid or not.

Good luck, game junkies.

Well, the Webby Award nominees for 2002 were announced. Same old same old, pretty much. I was kind of dissapointed that they didn't nominate FARK for anything, seems like a grievous oversight. Shockingly, this site was nowhere to be found either. Looks like the fix is in, people.

Top Arab Psychiatrist's Insane Rantings on Bush, the Joy of Suicide Bombing and Allah

This is why there will never be peace in the middle east. Even their psychiatrists are complete loons. Find me one rational psychiatrist anywhere else in the world who'd extoll the virtues of suicide bombings thusly:

"When the martyr dies a martyr's death, he attains the height of bliss. … As a professional psychiatrist, I say that the height of bliss comes with the end of the countdown: ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. And then, you press the button to blow yourself up. When the martyr reaches 'one,' and then 'boom,' he explodes, and senses himself flying, because he knows for certain that he is not dead. … It is a transition to another, more beautiful world, because he knows very well that within seconds he will see the light of the Creator.

Think its' time for your pills, doctor.

Countdown To Spiderman: The Movie

Well, later this week the Spiderman movie will be hitting theaters and I gotta tellya - I'm jazzed, folks. So far, so good, the couple trailers I've seen looked pretty good, Harry at aintitcoolnews all but peed himself he was so happy, after seeing a screening of it...things look like they're going to be okay, which is rare for a movie adapted from a comic book. I'm sure I'll have some minor nitpicking issues with it...I read the comic as a kid and had a huge stack of Spidey's various titles, moreso than any of the other comic heroes' books I collected. This is the big one. So, in honor of everyone's favorite wallcrawler, I'm going to post several links to spiderman-related things I've found.

First up, here's some pics of a cool old Spiderman pinball machine produced by Gottleib I'd really like to have.

King Features produces a daily Spiderman comic strip for newspapers across the country, as well as the web. Written by Stan Lee, Spidey's creator.

As far as the movie goes, you can get more info than you probably need at the official movie site, a prettied-up flash extravaganza that features interviews with the cast, wallpaper and even articles on the "spider-wrangler" who worked with the real arachnids used in the flick.

You can read the newly rehashed spiderman origin in Marvel's "webisodes" form, a sort of Flash comic book, at Marvel.com.

Someone has even been working on a total conversion mod for Quake 3 with a Spidey theme.

There are lots of vintage Spiderman toys for the collector-types, a list of essential reading from About.com, and anything else you might want can probably be found here.
